Spanish Casual Startup Unusuall Raises $3.6 Million, Led by Garena
Unusuall, a Spanish business, has acquired $3.6 million (€3 million) in venture capital from Free Fire publisher Garena.
Former King Barcelona head of studio David Picon and former main games designer Fatima Monllor, as well as Olga del Pozo, who has over 20 years of experience as a creative director, co-founded Unusuall in 2020. Picon and Monllor both worked at King to hasten the company’s entry into the mid-core genre.
Unusuall’s mission is to build casual mobile games that are more social and exciting. It intends to use the funds to expand its team. Over the next 12 months, it plans to hire more than 20 people across all game production disciplines.
Garena, which is part of the Singapore-based digital conglomerate SEA, isn’t the first company to invest in Unusuall. It was also a part of San Francisco casual mobile company Double Loop’s $8 million Series A investment in May 2021.
Of course, the continued popularity of shooter Fire Free, which was the most downloaded game in 2019 and 2020, has financed such activity. It was also the highest-grossing battle royale game in the United States, with over $100 million in revenue in Q1 2021.
